Beginning in 1968, Mikhl was Associate Professor, Professor, and then Chair of the Linguistics Department at Columbia University and the outstanding authority on Yiddish dialectology, and the historical and geographic dimensions of the Yiddish language and culture in Eastern Europe. Through his writings and teaching, Mikhl was responsible for training the next generation of Yiddish linguists, and fostering new research and study of Yiddish, ensuring that the Yiddish language and culture is remembered and understood.
